Even if President Trump miraculously changed his mind on withdrawing U.S. troops from Syria, he already inflicted significant damage to America's credibility as an ally. A good Syria team was finally in place and empowered at the State Department and they made painstaking progress to establish leverage over Assad, Russia and Turkey. All of it was traded away by Mr. Trump in exchange for a verbal assurance from Turkey's President Erdogan. Along with this decision is the end of a serious effort to push back on Iran outside of sanctions. The repercussions will be felt for years on other fronts as well.
